Force alone cannot stop 'religious cleansing' in Mideast, custos says

Protesters in Stuttgart, Germany, rally during an Aug. 23 demonstration initiated by the Syrian Orthodox Church in solidarity with religious minorities threatened in Northern Iraq and throughout the Middle East. The Franciscan custos of the Holy Land sai d force alone cannot stop "religious cleansing" in the Middle East.

VATICAN CITY - Although Christians, Muslims and Jews have struggled for hundreds of years to live peacefully alongside each other in the Middle East, "we have never seen the kind of 'religious cleansing' we are witnessing today," said the head of the region's Franciscans.
